Mission Focus
I work with an arm of the missions organization TeachBeyond. The byline of TeachBeyond is “Reaching the Nations Through Education”. The division of TeachBeyond that I work with is called the Sparrow Project. The Sparrow Project was started in 2021 when one of the TeachBeyond leaders was walking through the slums of the city of Lusaka, Zambia and noticed that there were schools popping up everywhere - in churches, in abandoned buildings, in garages, in chicken coops – and that the teachers had no training and very few materials. Out of this need grew a vision to help empower the teachers, especially Christian teachers, to reach their communities for Christ through Biblical-centered teaching. Thus began the Sparrow Project, whose primary goal is to provide training for teachers in under-resourced schools. Since 2021, the Sparrow Project has grown quickly! We now have a presence in 13 countries, including two creative-access nations. As associate director of the Sparrow Project, I work with other staff members as we develop curriculum, provide resources, empower our national leaders, and respond to requests for training from schools around the world. I also specifically work to encourage and mentor the leaders in Latin America and the French-speaking countries of West Africa.
Testimony
I grew up in a Christian family. I had a firsthand introduction to missions at a very early age, as my dad, who was a pastor, helped to start a Haitian church in south Florida. When I was seven years old, my parents left me in the care of a church family, while they went out of town to lead a mission trip. It was through a conversation with the mom of this family that I realized for the first time that the Gospel that I had heard for as long as I could remember was for me – that Jesus had died to save me from my sins and that I stood in need of a Savior. I acknowledged my sins to God and asked Him to forgive me and make me His child. Through the years, the Lord has shown me again and again that He is faithful. It is His faithfulness that continues to draw me to Him each day. When I was about ten years old, I began to feel a strong draw to foreign missions. After college, I taught in a Christian school in the U.S., but foreign missions continued to draw me. I was privileged to serve overseas for three years, in Russia and France. I returned to the U.S. with the purpose of attending seminary so that I could be more effective in missions. During my time in the U.S., three things happened: I finished seminary, the mission I had worked for was closed by the government, and I met the man who is now my husband! Terry and I were married in 2004. We have been blessed with our three children; Erin, Jesse, and Adam, and I have been able to remain involved in Christian education and part-time missions work. As my children have gotten older, I felt that God was leading me to be more involved in foreign missions, and He opened the door for me to begin serving with TeachBeyond in January of 2025. All praise be to Him!
