Getting Started |
|
Getting started is really easy, you just need a positive attitude.
Whether your child has or needs to develop a musical outlet, band is a great experience. While experienced kids are welcome into the band most start as beginners. Depending on maturity and aptitude, 9-10 years old is a good time to start music lessons. Practice for the child will take about 20 minutes a day. I request if you start your child in band at least have them complete a full semester to give it a fair evaluation. Beginners always struggle at first when their minds want to play the theme from Pocahontas but their fingers can only manage Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Getting an Instrument: Before you select your instrument it may be helpful to talk to me or a good music store can also advise you. Renting an instrument or borrowing one is a wise way to start. Renting makes it easier to try before you buy. Look under MUSICAL in the Yellow Pages. Expect $15-$35 per month rental fee. For greater savings ask if there is a used instrument you can rent. Once you are ready to buy we can discuss a good brand for your child. Sometimes relatives even have a horn in storage they can part with. Accessories: Depending on the instrument you choose you can expect to need some accessories. Brass players can expect to buy a mouthpiece cleaning brush, etc. Most instruments have their specific requirements for a nominal cost. In addition to what your rental store requires, all students are expected to purchase a wire music stand (~$10) and a pencil or two. Music and folders are provided as part of the class fee.
Location: The last thing you need is a map to the Church. If you are coming by for an audition or some other reason here is a map to my home.
End Notes: To aid in music selection and instrumentation, I only teach certain instruments in the Home School Band. Those are Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone (Euphonium), Tuba, and Percussion (drums).
